I would like to share another teaching from John Maxwell about Leadership. There are many thing that successful people do but here are 6 things that successful leaders do daily :
Success can be measured by many things and it is certainly unique to each individual leader. And isn’t that a good thing? That we can all achieve success in life and be fulfilled by different experiences! However; in order to achieve that success, whatever it may look like for you, there are common threads that provide a foundation to help you get there. These are the six things successful people do daily, weekly and over their lifetime to reach their full potential and experience real success.
Ask Questions Good leaders question everything: themselves, the people around them, their environment, the future, everything. And, it’s not because they lack trust, it’s because they are constantly evaluating their progress.
Asking questions allows you to evaluate your effort and goals, consider what matters and what will be effective with the people you lead. Ultimately, it helps uncover hopes, expectations, desires, needs and burdens. If you want to get to the heart of something, then asking questions is vital.
In John C. Maxwell’s words, “Few things will pay you bigger dividends in life than the time and trouble you take to understand people and build relationships.”
Expand Their Thinking
We can all spend a lot of time thinking, and thinking and thinking some more. There’s an endless number of things we can chew through and ruminate over, no doubt. But successful leaders practice positive, focused, intentional thinking that keeps their mind fresh and makes their actions more purposeful. They understand that yesterday’s thoughts affect today’s outcomes and so they are constantly building self-awareness to monitor their beliefs, expectations and attitudes about the moment, season or situation they are in. Think about it this way, the leader who thinks will always have a job, but the leader who thinks intentionally will always have influence.
In John’s words, “Your thinking, more than anything else, shapes the way you live. It’s really true that if you change your thinking, you can change your life.”
Evaluate Their Leadership Level
Successful leaders know that they only got to where they are today because they worked their way step by step to build meaningful relationships and harness influence with others. They know that every relationship starts out because of position or proximity and then they have a choice to keep pouring in, maximizing and developing trust with that person to become a successful leader with them. They know leadership is not something once gained and kept forever. Leadership is earned and maintained with each and every person in their influence.
In John’s words, “When people follow a leader because they have to, they will do only what they have to. People don’t give their best to leaders they like least. They give reluctant compliance, not commitment. They may give their hands but certainly not their heads or hearts.”
Focus On Growing
Successful people believe wholeheartedly in their potential. They not only desire to reach their potential, they have a plan to reach their potential. They know that in order to grow in their personal life and in leadership they must dedicate time, focus and thought to making it happen, because it won’t happen on its own. Successful leaders map a plan for growth and do a little something every day to get there.
In John’s words, “Small disciplines repeated with consistency every day lead to great achievements gained slowly over time.”
Learn From Failure
Successful leaders know they’re going to fail. They know it, and they go for it anyway. The difference for them is their attitude and their action following a failure. They see failure as an opportunity to learn, grow, evaluate and develop wisdom. Then, they act and act with success because they learned something. They frame failure as a chance to let go of something good to take hold of something better.
In John’s words, “The highest reward for our toil is not what we get for it but what we become by it. … Mistakes are not failures. They are proof that we are making an effort. When we understand that, we can more easily move out of our comfort zone, try something new, and improve. … Improvement demands a commitment to grow long after the mood in which it was made has passed.”
Plan for the Future Successful people surrender the superficial notion that they’ve “arrived” in life and recognize that the daily process is what makes them successful. They believe this and they see their life as a big plan to fulfill a really big purpose. Their planning has three essential elements that make their plans stick: they know their purpose and passion, they are willing to make time and do what it takes to reach their goals and milestones daily, and they surround themselves with people to go along the journey with them. They see the value of great companions in their purpose and they ultimately plan to make the future successful for others, not just for themselves.
In John’s words, “As you move forward on the success journey, you need to remember that what happens in you is more important than what happens to you. You can control your attitudes as you travel on the journey, but you have no control over the actions of others. You can choose what to put on your calendar, but you can’t control today’s circumstances. Unfortunately, the majority of fear and stress that people experience in life is from things they can do nothing about. Don’t let that happen to you.”
Being a successful leader takes intentionality, focus, preparation and time, but it will absolutely be worth it. You will see growth in every area of your life because that’s the power of successful leadership.
